125 Years![]()
Our Church HistoryLast year, Trinity United Methodist Church in San Antonio marked our 125th year of “offering Christ to all”. We began on April 10, 1879 in downtown San Antonio at Broadway and Pecan. Trinity belonged to the northern branch of American Methodism, the Methodist Episcopal Church, which had separated from the M.E. Church South in 1844 over slavery. The 13 original members, who came to Texas for business after the Civil War, requested a pastor from the bishop in Indiana, and the Rev. M. A. Daugherty was sent. After 40 years or so, the church moved to the Beacon Hill neighborhood and the new sanctuary was dedicated on February 13, 1921 on the corner of Grant and Huisache Streets. And after another 40 years, with the gift of five acres from the San Antonio District, Trinity moved to our present location at Wurzbach and Newcome in 1961. We began meeting at Glen Oaks Elementary School, moved into army barracks, constructed a fellowship hall and education building, and built the current sanctuary in 1978. In the early 1980’s the gym was constructed. In 1992 the Null office building and the memorial garden were added to the campus. Since 1969 Trinity United Methodist School has been serving children and now offers excellent education for age two through grade five.
